    Happy Saturday everyone

recently bought this antique silver brooch but can’t identify the stone

I was thinking maybe amber or agate but seems more like horn or tortoise shell

    I know the feeling.;)

It is agate, imo. Lovely brooch, the stone is in good condition.

I wonder why the studs are there. Could be:
    - The stone once had a pin attached to the back, and the current frame was added later, but still in the 1880s or so.
    - The stone originally had a silver decoration, for instance floral, on the front.

    Thanks for the reply

    Thank you

The stone is in good condition apart from small chip at the back but doesn’t affect the look

Do you think it could be Victorian from the style of the setting of the brooch

Yes possibly a silver decoration at the front

I think the pin and clasp combination and the way they are placed is ca 1880, so yes, Victorian.

Just a note to check the temperature of an item, an agate stone will feel colder to the touch than amber or tortoiseshell etc.

The pin is agate for me too. There may have been something on the front, but the rivets through the stone are attractive as they are.

Agreed with above. Agate with missing decoration. Yes, 19th c.

I've only ever seen these posts when they are holding something. Also the agate face is fairly empty of textures, which makes it a good backdrop but less likely to be a feature on it's own. The agate-only brooches I see seem to be chosen for their cool structures like dendritic, landscapes, and moss. I think the piece looks fine as is to wear and enjoy though. :)
