The good - very intricate cloisonne work. From researching on the internet I believe this is possibly the work of Honda Yasaburo which would date it between 1880-1910.
    This is about 15cm/6in tall.

The bad - someone dropped it at some point. Heavy damage to one side. Of course this enabled me to pick it up for peanuts at a local antique shop

Figured it was worth a few dollars even as is. I think its still gorgeous enough to display.

Question - it doesn't seem to be actively disintegrating or anything - but if this were yours, would you do anything to stabilize the damaged areas to ensure no more of the enamel comes off? If so - what?

I love this piece-really stunning example from (IMHO as a Westerner) Japan's supreme decorative era-Meiji. I would've paid a bit for this even damaged.
PS-Are the white dots on this piece splatters of house paint, damage or little highlights applied by the Artist ?

I think what you're seeing is just the photo lights i set up reflecting off certain very sparkly bits in the enamel? Nothing stands out as super white when I look at it in person in normal light.

    Agree it's stunning :)

Beautiful. So intricate and original. Personally I'd secure any loose areas by flooding with super glue but I am rough and most would probably lynch me for just suggesting it. :woot:

That's a beauty, even bashed about as it is. I'd be tempted to use glue too, to keep any lose bits from losing themselves.

You might use a good grade of matte-finish clear fingernail polish instead, just at the margins of the impact crater an' elsewhere that look chancy. It can be removed far more easily, should that become desirable. Good luck...

This is what makes this Forum such a good teaching tool. 99% of what I see at thrifts and sales is decent run of the mill $25-$100 pieces (worth buying or not)-this level of quality is the goal.

I'm very fond of cloisonné, an' have a few nice pieces...but have never seen anything like that vase. Superb doesn't offer sufficient praise for that Meiji masterpiece.

Jeez. I bet photos don’t do it any justice either. Makes the ding all the more heartbreaking but I guess that’s what allows us peasants to get a few special things here and there sometimes. Congrats.

Let's just say it pained me to reduce the quality of these photos down to where they would be uploadable on this site. They definitely don't do it justice. And yeah that's how I look at the damage... I definitely wouldn't have this piece if it were undamaged.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to consider doing this - I keep feeling like it's going to eventually come apart more.
