Found this 5 3/4" little fellow in a combo junk/antique yesterday. From some quick internet research he sees to be an African Chokwe tribe tobacco snuff mortar.
The Chokwe used to tobacco to smoke, or as snuff (ground in these tiny mortars) for divination, ancestor veneration, ceremonial and social purposes.
This piece has a hole in the base,it may have had another sculptural piece mounted below it, or could've been attached to a staff (?).
I'm guessing this is later 20th century, the earlier and more prestigious pieces were generally polished quite smoothly (few, if any chisel marks), and have an overall dark nut brown patina-but I'm def no expert on theses pieces !

Agree on that Komo- interesting that they'd use tobacco as a substance to communicate w/ ancestors ('the dead'), and for telling the future. Gives a whole new meaning to the term 'wacky tobaccy' !

Thanks 2many ! I looked at a fairly large landfill of *@#* before finally spying one thing of interest-bit of a wasteland out there (least for me).
Granted,if I was buying just to sell, might be grabbing Nintendo,Lego and clean higher end cookware/cutlery. Also some clothing (the true 'vintage' days are over) 1990's is vintage now.
    PS-Re 'Cutlery', we found a $200 bread knife & a top-rated electric knife sharpener, knife was $4,sharpener $10. There's still top-notch practical stuff out there-but I've always been a Grail Hunter (dreamer) !

The 'Wustof Classic' line made in Solingen seems to be the branding that goes for the big 'Bay bucks.
