Scrimshaw Question

I believe this money clip may be whalebone scrimshaw. What does it look like to you? It seems to be signed. When I run my fingernail over it, it is etched. It's only base metal. Thanks.

 

It's probably some kind of bone but most likely not whale bone. Looks like a modern piece, not old.

 

I can't see any of the features that would allow us to identify it as sperm whale tooth.

Except, looks like someone keeping tally with hatchmarks who got up to 6?

I have 2 scrimshaw pieces. One is flat on both sides & might be tooth or tusk:



The material of the other looks more like yours. Is yours also more of a cabochon shape, domed on top?



I submitted 'Ray II" to a scrimshaw artist database, but he was unknown to them.

As I look more carefully at this piece, I'm seeing Schreger lines (look to the left of her face), and, I am sad to say, they look more like those of modern elephants rather than those of mammoths, as far as I can tell from on line photos.

The material of your piece also looks like ivory to me, except cut the long way instead of cross cut.
