Hello! Can you tell me, please, is this the marks or the initials of the author? The numbers are the date, month, and year. I found a plate with the same pattern, but it was made a little differently, but there was no such marks.

I suspect it's the monogram of the decorator.

When you say you "found a plate with the same pattern" do you mean the exact scene?

    It's lovely, by the way.

I guess, because the date lists month then day then year, it must be American? Or are there other countries besides us who do that?

Maybe. I was thinking day, month, and year.

There appears to be a company called EF Bodley & Son in England that produced a series of Danish Bird plates between circa 1881 - 1898. That would fit with the date on the back of your plate. I was able to find two other plates on eBay from the series. While the birds pictured are different from yours, the style is roughly the same. I can't explain the discrepancy in the mark, although marks were not always an exact science in the late 1800's. Sometimes you'll find you'll find factory marks, sometimes decorator marks, sometimes both. I had considered that your plate might be a later copy but it does fall within the original date range that EF Bodley & Son was producing the series.

I read the date as day, month, year too.

Could be, I guess since I'm American I automatically read it our way :)

The Bodley plates in this series are printed in black with fairly basic hand painting. The monogrammed plate is entirely hand painted, requiring a completely different level of skill. Probably worth looking carefully for impressed marks under the glaze.

Thank you. There are no marks under the glaze. Only two letters and a date.
