IMG_6527.jpeg IMG_6528.jpeg IMG_6529.jpeg IMG_6532.jpeg IMG_6530.jpeg Hello everyone, I just picked up this beautiful Murano vase from an estate auction and from my research it seems its a Ercole Barovier Graffito vase. I was wondering if this is real or a repro? It also seems real from the pontil scar, but I’m not very experienced with glass. The first buyer didn’t pay after winning and had a phone number that was out of service, so that was quite a nice birthday surprise lol

Just a general remark: this strikes me as such an elaborate piece of glass making, it is hard to imagine that anyone could make convincing fakes & do it at a cost that would make the endeavor profitable.

That makes sense, I always question it when I get a good deal for stuff like this. I guess some people don’t research what they have

Since I had not heard of this maker I of course googled it. Barovier's output appears to have been quite varied, but nothing the search showed me really looked like this. In particular this shape was not seen. However, it seems to me a highly sophisticated work, so would expect that if not Barovier, then some other important maker. Not really helpful, but hope it encourages you to keep researching. :)

Edit: Google lens showed me what it probably showed you. One example (with a ridiculously difficult anti-bot test):

As far as I can tell, there’s a few other examples from Wright auction house:

They say it is part of the PU test series. My Italian is not good enough to make a guess as to what PU stood for. They also say the example they show is the only one known.

Were you selling on ebay? For what this vase is supposed to be worth, you might want to try a high end auction house. They charge quite a bit in commission, but since you got a bargain on it, why not?
