Just got this Limoges serving platter with an ormolu mount at an auction for $60, still can’t believe how little these go for nowadays. Haven’t seen a mark with the red painted over so I guess the artist did that. Has anyone seen a similar mount or was that put on by the artist as well? 13” dia, 4” tall IMG_6574.jpeg IMG_6580.jpeg IMG_6576.jpeg IMG_6575.jpeg IMG_6581.jpeg

Don't know for sure, but if I had to guess, I would say that the decorator or decorating house applied the ormolu. It's a beautiful plate.

You've been finding some really nice things lately.

Definitely makes sense that the decorator attached it, I just noticed that the feet are separate from the roses and were applied after.

Thanks, I’ve been pretty lucky at estate sales and auctions for the past month. This summer was pretty rough though

I think the red may have been a deliberate attempt to obscure the mark. The JPL mark used here is most likely a green mark which would indicate that the dish was originally sold as whiteware. It was a fairly common practice to obscure whitewarae marks so the piece couldn't be confused with pieces actually decorated by JPL. It was sold blank most likely to an independent decorating shop. The decorating shop painted it and then either attached it to the base themselves or sold it on to another decorator who added the base. It wasn't an unusual arrangement, somewhat similiar to the way lamps were produced. There's just no way to know for sure.

    Looks hobbyist-painted to me.
