    AI says flame mahogany...?
Looking at the bottom edge, it appears to be a veneer.

Book matched flame mahogany veneer. Beautiful!

Looks like a puppy modified the bottom edge. Perhaps faux painting it could touch it up and keep your eye from going to it.

Gorgeous mahogany veneer, well worth doing a little touch up.

Thank you all .. I appreciate your help. My nephew inherited this piece and is hoping to get it restored. I assume it is a fairly old piece?

Book-matched mahogany veneers. Circa 1850, late classical revival (or also sometimes called pillar and scroll). Often gets mis-named as American empire, which was an earlier period style.
