Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I've grown interested in the game of cribbage, having learned to play only a few years ago. Occasionally I search for old photos of people playing. This is the oldest one I've ever seen, found on eBay. Probably late 1870s or early 1880s. This is a British CDV, from a photographer in Cranbrook.

A couple of things slightly unusual. First, in current experience I see a lot more men than women playing. Don't know how it was in the 19th century. Also, three of the women are playing. While three is possible, seems that it's more common with two players. Some boards now are created with only a two-player option.

It looks like only two were playing and two were watching. Maybe two against two?

Maybe it's just a posed photo. Dunno. I didn't see the third hand. That would be positively strange for a cribbage game.

Three players can happen in cribbage. Some boards have room for three. Another option would be that two players are playing as a team against the other one. That seems odd, though.

The lady in the back on the left could just be holding her cards very low. Here arms are positioned like she is either holding something in her hands or her hands are in her lap. I also noticed that only 2 of the women are drinking whatever is in the decanter. I also noticed the 2 women appear to be dressed alike.:happy:

Thrifting late in the day, I found these items. The Lenox Wheat pattern covered vegetable dish was $4: the lowest price on ebay was $119.99 (all the other listings are over $200. Not my auction, for reference only.)

The Limoge dinner plates were $2 each, I bought the four that were there. Posted on the pottery/glass board with questions.

Either works well as an emetic, at least in my case. I'll leave them to whomever wants them. The green really skunky stuff too.
