    Hi friends. This is pretty clearly signed, and seems pretty well done, but I still can't find it.

    S. Melchior. H.

    Image measures about 12.5" x 9.5" (32x24cm);
    found in Portland, Oregon

    Thanks for any help on the name and also any comments about the artist's skill.

    Could it be a painting by an amateur, after Soren Melchior Hansen?

    The C in Melchior is in such a weird position, that it looks as if the name was first misspelled without the C

    Yes, I thought that was likely. The signature isn’t like others shown online and the quality of the work isn’t as fine.

    That seems possible for sure.

    Agree.

    I guess a next question should be about timeline. This painting seems older: the frame has a patina, the canvas is and has stretched (and needs to be stretched again); and the canvas is tacked with actual tacks and not staples, which I know from @komokwa usually indicates age.

    If Soren Melchior Hansen lived 1908-1978, does that match up with someone recreating his painting in a near-vintage timeline--the apparent timeline of my painting?

    komokwa The Truth is out there...!

    not staples is good..... but that's a weird frame and stretcher....... all cut from the same wood... poorly cut so it needed those nailed on corners , furniture tacks on the canvas , and poorly attached to the frame with those long nails , too long so they were hammered to bend flat on the wood.......:eek::eek::eek:

    That's an amateur job.... home made...but with the antique gold paint being a redeeming quality !!

    The canvas does seem to have some honest age..... with a nice use of colors for depth...but with poor shading.

    As Charles says...... good from far , but far from good........ imho !

    I might think 1950's circa.......more or less. Maybe a tad earlier....

    In every picture I saw his signature looks like this. I'd say talented amateur painted yours.

    I suspect it's recent-ish and decorative, the association with Soren Melchior Hansen not being coincidental.
