    Good evening
Found this in a charity shop last week. It is 18mm x 10mm and made I think glazed steatite or pottery.
I am not certain if it is millenia or decades old, but I still love it. It is much smaller than my other scarab in my collection.

Cool. Looks old, but that doesn't mean anything, LOL. Wondering if it is a vintage (possibly antique) souvenir from Egypt?

    Nice find!

I found one on a local marketplace recently that was wrapped in a small amount of hallmarked Egyptian gold. Very small amount. Same lady had pottery mummy wrapped in hallmarked silver. That one bigger, 1.5”-2” maybe, while scarab was around penny sized. Guessing a relative must have brought them home in the 20’s-30’s or so. The marks are so small and struck on such dainty metal that I’m not sure I could get much info from them. I’ve got a couple loose scarabs as well. I think at least one is potentially ancient.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Do you mean because the writing might not date from ancient times? Or... something else? Maybe somebody else will know...

I use the word 'cause that's all I know about Egyptian Pictograms...is that word. Are there other terms, depending on relative age, or...?

Looks good for an older "copy" to my eye, the hieroglyphs are well caarved. Grand Tour.

This thread led me to run an eBay search I haven't done for many years: Egyptian Jewelry. That led to several posts in the Laughable eBoo thread, as well as messages to several sellers that their Egyptian 14K marks are actually for 12K. All this was by way of a diversion while I considered whether or not I had anything useful to contribute to this discussion.

Not much, but a little. It looks more like glazed pottery to me than like anything else; very hard to tell without being able to handle. Despite some resemblance, I do not think it is actually faience. It does look older to me, & good quality, perhaps antique, but not an antiquity.

I imagine it as being easier to copy a known hieroglyphic inscription than to make one up. At least some, I believe, are copied from the cartouches of rulers. For all I know, some may just say, Don't forget to buy bread. (Pray some AI doesn't pick that up & promulgate it!)
