Ananth has confirmed that it looks like hardboard, which is what it looked like to me too, which is why I asked before. Whether Masonite or another brand, is impossible to tell from the photo, but the main thing is that it is hardboard.
He also says the painting is painted on canvas.

And as I said before, it looks like the canvas has been cut from a bigger painting. It is an excellent painting, but it has been fiddled with.

    :nailbiting:

She looks a lot better than Rembrandt's Oopjen Coppit.;)

As an aside, Rembrandt had a talent for making people look ugly.:( I have never met anyone who actually looks like a Rembrandt portrait.

I would remove that backing board to see what you have underneath. It is not original, nor appropriate for the painting. There may be clues to the painter and/or the sitter found once opened.

And doing so shouldn't do any damage.

looks like a semi-reproduction of the other paintings. The patterned board texture looks somewhat modern, like it was manufactured in the past 150 years. nicely executed and would like tactful in a millionaire's home or in the office of a university president, but an art museum official would giggle at it.

Hi everyone, thank you all for your suggestions and comments. :)

I did some investigation and found that the portrait I have is a print of a larger painting at the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History: Portrait of an unknown woman by Jan van Ravesteyn. https://rkd.nl/images/125233

Found the image by reverse image search through Tineye.
This website was very useful: https://imgops.com/

    Kind regards,
    Ananth

A thousand Dittos on this one Debora. When the huge deluge of 'shares' begin on Recent Topics our brains & eyeballs can quickly become overwhelmed-important to clearly present all the info in that first post !

yes if you examine the image with magnifiers or microscopes and you notice printing color clusters or a purely flat surface devoid of 3-D painting texture, that's the kiss of death.
