Mid Century Modular Sofa Unit

Hi all,

A new addition today, and I love it! A (probably) 1960s modular sofa set. The two partition tables lift to reveal storage space and the sections can be rearranged. Next stop will be to our upholsterer and then into the workshop to have the table tops replaced as they are quite tired. If you know anything about this particular set, please do share!

Any suggestions about fabrics, colour combinations and table stains are welcome.

It doesn't look to be in bad nick in the pictures, but some things don't show up. I'd clean the fabric upholstery and see where it goes. The buttons having gone MIA is the bigger problem; I might replace all of them with something that coordinates with the (new) upholstery and leave the orange vinyl otherwise alone. Many naugas gave their hides for that set.

Lol! That does appear to be mine, but in a previous life as I purchased it elsewhere. I'm very familiar with Ercol's ranges and I've not come across anything produced by them that would resemble this. On the dating, I completely agree. If I was listing it, without provenance, I'd describe it as late 60s / early 70s.

 

The foam has gone on the seats. I'm not familiar with the law in other countries, but in the UK it is illegal to sell mid century furniture with the original upholstery as it does not meet the UK's fire retardancy laws. An exception is if an item is sold as a work of art. I do personally like the current colour scheme, so maybe keep it original with the new upholstery.

 

Another vote for 1970s.

 

If the foam is a fire hazard and shot, reupholster away. They used to sell orange and brown nubby upholstry fabric in about that era. It wasn't my style, but it would look the business with orange vinyl. Might get a little dark if you used it everywhere. I'd probably strip and refinish the wood too.

 

Looks like the mod orange Braniff Airlines used. They really went all out with modernist design and color.... lobby terminals, uniforms, etc.

I like it, too... maybe change the color of the table tops, though. Maybe a little bit darker grey than the seats, or even dark charcoal or black? Unless you want it to look more like the original. I'm assuming the table tops are not solid wood. If they are, that is different.

 

Another idea for the tops would be to make them a darker orange color than whatever you end up with after upholstering.

 

For the final mid-century touch be sure to cover the finished product with super-thick clear crinkly cold sticky vinyl covers. My mom loved those covers and everyone else hated them

Don’t laugh I have them on my dining room chairs. When you have no kids & you recover chairs in silk you are clearly not thinking what if I have kids one day …. They are removable, but I keep them on.

 

Silk seats and kids? I don't blame you!

 

Odd the upholstery guy knew me for years & never said a word to me. He did however deliver them with the seat covers. So glad we kept them!

 

That's probably why he sent seat covers.
