    Hi Folks

A cool folk art/ naive style painting i picked up today

the stamp on the back leads to a few others, hoping it might lead to an artist

i'm guessing the stamp is of the owner of the painting ?,,,or paintings?

    guessing at early 20th

    any help appreciated

The other end of the bridge is not visible, it might be a 3 arch, a 4 or 5
If you Google Stone arched river bridges in Wales there's many.

Bear in mind some pictures might be newer or older than the painting and might not show repairs or newly built buildings.
They might be taken from the other side of the river too.

I like it! Sure looks like it has some age. Wouldn't mind going fishing in that river, back then.

It might just be grasses but you might want to do a look to see if there might be a signature, for example, on the lower left. (I was messing with the colors to see what it looked like)

yeah think it will have to come out to get anything definitive......and even then .....;)

i find theres usually quite a fine line with these naive folk types, but liked this.....

especially the big tree and the play of shadow in the water

......and the sheep across the river

"thats supposed to be sheep :jawdrop::wacky:"

    ......yes mate.....(i think so anyway:confused:)

    :)

Charming naive painting, charlie. Love the colours too, and as Bdigger said, I'm sure it'll be spectacular after cleaning, the colours will pop.

Looks like the man in the back of the pirogue-like boat is wearing one of those fishermen caps you usually see in southern Europe. So I had to check if they were worn in Wales as well, and found this wonderful photograph of a Welsh fisherman having a rest in his very Welsh coracle:playful::

    Welsh fisherman with coracle.jpg

So yes, Welsh fisherman wore them too.:)

The woman is wearing a traditional bonnet. I am glad she is wearing genuine dress, not the fake Welsh dress invented by lady Llanover (what was she thinking!).

I think the costumes, as well as the style of the signature, place your painting in the 19th century.

    wonderful help, thanks Aj

Fisherman or movie star ? (to a certain extent) ;) (guess its all that rowing/work)

i was beginning to worry (because it being wales n all) that it was from the 1980s and just 2 ladies being shuttled across to watch emmerdale Farm :playful:

so glad its got some good age:happy:

He certainly thinks he's the man.:playful: It is a great photo, pretty unusual for the period.
Reception is always better on the other side of the river.:joyful:
