Featured Two nice old brooches today

Both sold as Victorian silver and paste. I think the bow is French. I also think it has black dots but the light has gone for the day.

The other one, I need to get my tester on.

If it is French is will be marked, probably with a tiny crab mark. But I have a sneaking suspicion it is Dutch, in which case it is could be marked with a tiny sword mark.

I can see an 800 mark on the back of the flower - dead center. The bow..dunno, but there's definitel a Something dead center too. A sword mark sounds likely, unless it a ding from when they replaced the clasp.

Probably German, early 20th century.

 

There is a new Facebook page called Bring Back The Brooch and people are collecting them again!

 

And wearing them. They have been for a some years, but it is mostly the fashionistas that wear them.

On the bow, is the mark looking like an urn?
If so, what I call etruscan urn mysterious maker mark.
Finally identified after years of sleuthing as Parisian Diamond Company (who was the retailer of pieces I suspect made in Pforzheim).

Kyra, I did wonder about your Parisian company, and yes indeed it looks like that urn. And I managed to get photos of the mark too. Ruth has eagle eyes!

As an aside, if one more idiot on Facebook tells me something can't be old if it has 925 on it.....

She has indeed got the eagle eye. It’s lovely quality which supports the idea that it’s a pforzheim maker. I’ve never had a piece from there which wasn’t beautifully made.

Men are wearing brooches with formalwear in place of corsages and the like. Hollywood types did it first, and the trend spread from there; it goes with the reduse/recycle aesthetic .. and they're sparkly.

 

I did an antique show this weekend and a repeat customer came in and bought a Christmas pin, he plans on wearing it on his lapel, just like the one he bought last year

 

And now he's a collector, even if he doesn't yet realize it.

 

He needs three for that. Hmmm, that's such a problem to have. I went over that threshhold (thinks hard) about..dunno... pins ago. I have three snowflake necklaces that I know of. He needs those next.
