I saw this in a thrift shop and just walked by. My wife thought it was kitchey and looked at it. She pointed out the date on the back and we bought it.

It's basically crap, though the painting itself isn't bad being on velvet. From August 15th, 1937 it's pretty cool.

Some couple might have bought this on their honeymoon. At least that's the story I'm going with.

I think that's fabulous. True period kitsch. And certainly expect it was bought (by an unsophisticated couple) on their honeymoon. Think you're right about it being reproduced from a widely distributed image.

Are those on velvet? Those seem more like canvas paintings. Someone must have hung up a photo, and people just painted it. I really like the water in the first one.
Everytime I click an ebay link, I get a blank page. This computer is not even on it's last leg. It's covering itself in dirt. I just keep it on.
How do you not think of Elvis when you see velvet?

No, they're not on velvet. But they're of the same scene. As I wrote, I would suspect all were created from a widely distributed photograph.

I remember going there as a kid in the early 70’s, and the gift shop still had velvet paintings. I guess velvet pictures were a thing.

They were a thing well into the 70s. Fifty years later, they're beloved again by some.
