I haven’t tested the setting yet. Could be gold or GF. The stone looks good to my amateur opal eyes. It’s got major fire when the sun hits it. I’m not seeing any of the geometrical confetti type stuff I’d expect from faux or lab opal. It is making itself hard to photograph with my old phone. What say thee’s? It looks like an opal to me. It's very cool.

Is it a pin? Looks good for opal to me as well.

I'd say opal pin. Can we see the rest? I think I saw a Victorian-style hinge on the back. That may be a Halley's Comet pin, but I can't see enough to be sure.

It is an older one and it is a Haleys comet form. It actually hadn’t occurred to me that it was until you mentioned it. It should have, not sure where my head was on that one.

It ended up testing for gold too. Passed 10 and 14 acid. Good score for the amount I paid for a bag of otherwise vintage less interesting stuff.

Still not nearly as nice as this one I dug out of the ground a while back. Worth a revisit as I mourn the end of the detecting season. Grounds getting hard out there. I don’t think I found any gold this year. Possibly the first time since I began detecting. I did make it out much less this year though. https://www.antiquers.com/threads/halley’s-comet-brooch-from-the-earth.79960/#post-9504755

If it's Victorian or British it could be 15k or even 16. That's a nice little score from a junk pile. God bless unobservant junque dealers!
