I found this in a thrift store yesterday & bought it because of the signature (& $9.99 price) - I couldn't read it and thought "if I buy this & post on antiquers.com, I'm sure someone there will know who it is!
Also last week I noticed several portrait paintings going for a lot of money & when I saw this it reminded me of the others I saw and decided to take a chance!
So, can anyone tell me who the artist was , if they were known?
    Thanks all!

Congrats J-This guy was really good at glamour portraits. Look-he's got Liz & Dick,Ursula Andress,Belmondo, etc, etc. It's a true historic document of that era (and way better than that 'Rembrandt' !).

The collector, Reiter, is interested in documenting more of Simatos' paintings.
"He also puts out a call to the public, at large, asking for help in identifying the anonymous sitters seen in many portraits. And, when newly discovered portraits arise, Reiter intends to travel to meet the owners and document their acquisitions for his catalogue raisonné."

In the Epilogue (near the bottom of the article) the site editors say: "If you would like to read Reiter’s full essay, please send us an email and we will be pleased to forward it to him for his direct response." So, he might be interested in hearing about your find.

There is a way to send emails here -

Hi. I'm Mark Reiter, the collector of Christos Simatos' portraits. I can't believe I'm only seeing your post now. I regularly scour the internet for anything related to Simatos. I believe I own the only collection of his works - nearing 200, now - plus copies of another 150, or so, that I've found online, and printed out.

Hi. I'm Mark Reiter, the collector of all things Christos Simatos. I can't believe I missed your post - I regularly scour the internet for all things Simatos. Did you try to contact me through Discoveries in American Art? Anyway, I would like to add your portrait to my collection of copies. Could you send me a better photo of it? Mark

I did but no answer - I'm sorry but I gave that away to someone who bought several paintings from me!
I wish I'd heard from you sooner,

    Hi Charles,

Sorry about that. The editor of Discoveries... has, on several occasions, been negligent in referring readers to me. But thanks for trying!

May I ask where you found the portrait? What city? Flea market, thrift store, dumpster diving? And now I'm going to push the envelope and ask you, if you happen to be in communication with the individual to whom you gave the portrait, I would be willing to purchase it from them. OR could they, at least, take a better picture of the portrait - for my Simatos archive? I don't have to own every Simatos portrait that I'm aware of (but it would be nice). For those works not in my possession, I do want a clear photo. In addition to my collection of 200 originals, I have at least another 125 I found floating around on the web, which I print out as professionally as an unprofessional like me can. My guess/estimate is that there are at least 1000 more originals out there. My art treasure hunt is ongoing!

I appreciate your interest and hope to hear some good news about your art find.

    Mark
