hi folks, picked up this yesterday for a scrap silver price (millionaire guy has opened a little shop to sell off all his goldy silver bits)

got it cheaper because of the lower grade silver mark......but whats that other bit about

also did a lil look online.......and might be more interesting than i thought as well ;)

    help appreciated

    Hi Charlie,
We've established Norge means Norway but I didn't know about the Nr375 mark.
830 is obviously the silver content.
Nr means Norway and 375 is the production number rather than a gold purity content number.

    Here's what AI says.

Historical or Collector Marks: There are recorded instances of "NORGE 1940" rings (often associated with WWII memorabilia) that bear an internal mark of "Nr. 375," though collectors sometimes debate the authenticity or origin of these specific markings

hopefully with it having a Norwegian maker that might cut out the possible german connections that are being made by other sellers ?

I think you can’t rule out the German connection.

    "Don't mention the war".:D
So I agree, you can't rule out the German connection. Norway was invaded by Nazi Germany in 1940, and this could well be a symbol of patriotism. It would have had to be hidden for some time though.

The Netherlands had "Resistance jewellery" during WWII, often made from coins with the head of Queen Wilhelmina or painted wooden cutouts of the initials of the royal family. Those couldn't be worn out in the open, but would be worn privately, with like-minded people.
Fun detail, the ladies who still wore regional dress with its wide skirts would wear three underskirts in red, white and blue, the colours of the Dutch flag.:)

was thinking of a popular Basil image to conjure up that quote ;);)

    ....but alas (controversial enough here)

i went with him just about to wallop an innocent Spaniard instead (phew)

My memory is a little hazy, but sometime in the mid '60s I was in Greece on a student tour with my classics class. I did not understand the politics of the time (and still don't). But what I do remember was a particular incident regarding a ring I was wearing. It was a Mexican ring from Taxco, and looked like this example -

While browsing a shop in Athens, the shopkeeper approached me and asked if she could buy it. She explained that she was interested in this version of a peace ring because, unlike others that had the symbol placed as a disk on top of the band, this one could be turned to hide the symbol if the police came into her shop. I gave it to her.

    Very kind of you.:)
I guess that was during the regime of the colonels? Those were very different times in Greece, no democracy, repression of free speech etc.

    Everything old is new again.(sigh)

Santa Claus was based in reality, and commerce has made him into something he wasn't. The real guy was Nicholas of Myra, a Turkish priest who gave a few girls some small change so they could have a dowry and get married. From that, to a giant white dude in a fluffy red suit living at the North Pole.

The Norwegian ring is definitely Resistance jewelry. I'm not sure whose monogram is on it.
