Hello to everyone out there I have this Put a hole into his handkerchief that I came across in my closet and was wondering if anybody could tell if it had anything maybe historic about it it was in a frame with the handwritten letter that came with it, and I try to do some research on the names, but wasn’t sure if it may be was anybody of interest or if it’s just something that somebody made in the past I thought I would put it on here and maybe somebody else could maybe read the letter and figure out something more than I could. I could barely even read the note so it was kinda hard to do research when I didn’t even really know what it said but anyway if anybody has any ideas that would be great thank you and thanks for taking a look. How wonderful! An heirloom. Would/could you post a larger photograph of the note?

Unfortunately, blowing it up takes it out of register. It really needs to be rephotographed with a macro lens.

A napkin could be a handkerchief, right? My grandmother called hankies napkins from time to time. But what is meant by "Put a hole into his"? Do these people referenced in the note sound like they may be relatives of yours?

I really appreciate it. Everybody for your input just came across it and just can’t remember when I picked it up or where I picked it up or maybe it was my father’s. I just can’t remember. Just wanted to see if it had any significance You just never know and I couldn’t really find out any information about the family so I guess it’s just a family heirloom but seems like it’s pretty old. Guess I’ll just put it back in the closet. Just wanted to make sure that it didn’t come from somebody important or an important family but just doesn’t seem like it thank you again everybody for your time that you spent looking at it. it really is much appreciated. Thank you and happy New Year’s

If you posted a better quality photograph, it might be possible to more fully read the handwritten note. And then, with that information, the family mentioned might be traced through familysearch.org. Would/could you do that?

I'd love to see both the letter and the fabric "up close" / clear!
My take that it was born 1772 died 1857 - making her 85. Are those initials in the upper left hand corner of the textile? If so are they "woven" into the textile or embroidered on??
    So many questions!
    Cheerio!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I think the last name of Elias, repeated several more times on the paper, is probably Lounsbury. (I'm about 95% sure of it.) By the way, there are several people with the Lounsbury surname, and similar first names, memorialized on Find A Grave. The ones I was looking at were all living in (and died in) the New Haven, Connecticut area in the right time period.

I'm not saying for sure that New Haven is the area where these people lived. But it's something to consider. And Debora was the first to suggest that clearer photos be taken. I agree!

It reads "m. Elias Lounsbury" and the m. would be an abbreviation for "married."

Based on the information that @Debora posted, I found a Find A Grave entry for Mary (Perkins) Lounsbury. The unreadable year of her death on the paper is 1859.
    https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/83315560/mary-jane-lounsbury

However, the piece of paper lists the name on the first line as "Mary Thomas Perkins" and that is really the name of Mary (Perkins) Lounsbury's mother, according to the information in the links that both Debora and I listed. The dates of birth and death on the second line of the paper are for the daughter Mary (Perkins) Lounsbury. (1771-1859).
