    Hi everyone!
I'm so excited to show you my new Japanese tansu chest! :woot:
It was in a junky thrift store, just sitting there amongst all the clutter. It is so unusual to find quality Asian furniture in my area, so I am over the moon.
The price was ridiculously low and it is now mine!

Absolutely love it ! One of my new fave finds is a Japanese Meiji (maybe ?) hibachi, found in a thrift.
Japanese design is frequently an elegant combo of meticulous and organic. IMHO Really High-Meiji (like some of Shamster's) approaches Faberge' level.

BINGO. I love finding things in places where they have no business being. That often means it's going cheap because the seller wants it gone.

One of my (Our ?) Antique Ten Commandments is-'Lead for Gold', or buy low-sell high !
That way not if but when you end up w/ a dud-don't need as big a Band-Aid.

Komo, it was only $135 USD.
I would've been a damn fool not to buy it.

Yes! It is so well made! All put together with tiny dowels. I was also shocked that none of the iron pieces were damaged or missing. Real quality.

This was a funky, junk filled place that I had driven by many times but never went into.
But yesterday, something compelled me to pull into the parking lot. Intuition?

Yes, they had absolutely no idea what this thing was. But when I saw it, all the bells went off in my head! I have been hunting Asian furniture for a long time and never thought I would stumble onto something quite this nice.

Yes, I thought the cast iron Shiva would go nicely with the iron fixtures on the chest.
The lotus bowl is another lucky thrift find, Marblehead Pottery. There's a thread about it on this site somewhere.

As a side note, the door covering the secret drawers was locked. And of course there is no key.
I thought long and hard about how I was going to get in there. After doing some research to understand how tansu locks work, I had to pick the lock. It took some doing but I finally got it open.

It was pretty exciting thinking I was the first person to look in those drawers probably for decades.

Empty, alas. We dream of gold and silver, or at least Meiji hair combs, but at most it held a receipt from 1962 for landscaping plants.

That, and incessant curiosity. It sounds like a place I'd be in weekly. :p:p:p
