Featured Painting with damage

I thought this painting had too much depth, too much technique, to just leave it at the store. Also looks to have some age, though the canvas says, not too much age.

I'm guessing it's California. (I'm in Oregon, which by west coast of US standards, isn't too far away.)

But damage, yes. I know that's likely fixable but won't be cheap. Maybe it's a famous artist? Unsigned. 16" x 20"

I'd love your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

i likes it, and whatever it is.........a bargain at that price (woulda come right home with me as well)

wondering if you could add the whole thing to a second frame to minimalize all the edge damage/wear

all that depth is of course intentional it seems and that particular style

i like that way the sky/clouds looks like its building around the barn, and leaving that area more illuminated out of the clouds, don't know if thats intentional or not

 

Yeah, that's a great idea.

I think it was intentional--- I thought the painting seemed 'atmospheric.'


It'll be a 'project' I hope to get to at some point.

 

Certainly an appealing work with a very skilled execution of light. Can see why you couldn't leave it behind. Does look like California.

I like it too. It almost looks like a 19th century naive painting.
I wonder if it was put on a new stretcher?

Yes-- it's stapled. I coulda sworn I took a pic of the staples, but obviously not. I'll do so later when home.

That's a great idea, one I would not have thought of.

That's what I was thinking too, but a replacement stretcher would put the 30s back into play. The buildings and fields have a very 30s look to them, but the trees and sky look earlier. So..not sure.

 

More pics: The script lines on the back, maybe initials as @charlie cheswick suggested, look a little like ballpoint pen to me. No idea what or who or when that might indicate.

i get the impression the ballpoint was done after the fact by someone else (for whatever reason)

you can see where someone (when re framing) has just tries to cut (hatchet) off the overlap

i don't even think factory paintings have that that poor level of execution.......so i would be very surprised if someone untrained hadn't had a go at reframing

....but thats all credit to you mate in a way cause the paintings nice

 

The same vibe, the same painting technique, same use of yellow to emphasize the light and similar impressive clouds. So it could be him.
