I just picked up an etching that intrigued me simply because the artist is a mystery as its completely unsigned unfortunately.

Does anyone agree with me that this seem to resemble a Rembrandt? It reminds me of his style at least...

It does have that loose sketching style, but it doesn't have the stronger and darker lines Rembrandt used alongside the 'fuzzy' ones.

The little guy seems to be enjoying himself, on his bench with a jug of beer or wine.:) I think the etching could indeed be Dutch, because he seems to be practising the fine art of doing nothing, for which the Dutch language has a verb: "niksen". Niksen is very important in Dutch life and it contributes to the Dutch being one of the happiest nations on earth.:joyful:

    Expressive, for a small work.

Thank you Any Jewelry! Kind of a fun piece as more details seem to show up the longer you look at it (at least for me). He seems to have a jug in his right hand and a cup in his hand (didn't notice that at first glance myself) and then there's a couple (only saw the man to begin with) behind him on our right.

Any Jewelry, thank you so much! I have a word to add to my list of favorites. Niksen. My wife, having grown up on a dairy farm, doesn't grasp the concept. I, on the other hand, can sit quietly for hours, content to observe the passing clouds. She calls it lazy. I call it philosophy.

The fellow in the etching has a calm, tranquilly contented look on his face that comes from a comfortably full belly, a pot of beer, a warm fire, and the anticipation of a soft bed.
    One could envy him.

I think he's very relaxed and fondly remembering the image of the couple.
