    Hello Folks,

Thought that I would create a thread for Rookwood Pottery collectors to discuss market conditions, different types of pottery produced (early wares, matt wares, more mass produced production wares) and to show off pieces in their collections.

Over the past decade Rookwood Pottery prices have seen fairly substantial declines (40%+/-), especially for more common later production pieces. However there are some signs that prices have begun to stabilize and now might be a decent time for a collector to add a few examples to their collections.

In recent years Rookwood Pottery has been started anew with production facilities in Cincinnati, OH making high end tiles and architectural products.

Here is a previous thread on Antiquers that mentioned Rookwood Pottery.

So if you have any Rookwood Pottery or have any interest in Rookwood, this thread is for you, please chime in with your thoughts.

Here is a recent acquisition of mine. A Rookwood Pottery hand-painted matt vase by noted artist Kitaro Shirayamadani. My photos aren't doing it justice.

Sometimes you get a better photo if you take it at a distance, focus and then you can crop it.

I am not really a Rookwood collector but add a little production piece in now and then. At a recent higher-end auction I purchased a Rookwood box and a monkey paperweight for $125. I also paid $100 for a dancing maiden vase. I thought both were good buys but I plan to keep rather than sell. I would say the Indianapolis market is starting to stable - I don't expect to see lower prices.

I like the matte pieces with hand carved geometric patterns production from 1900-1920. Alas though, sold it all many years ago.

Rookwood made some of the best pottery ever produced. They also made some of the worst. Their later production pieces are, for the most part, mousy in form and boring in glaze. I have had some over the years to re-sell but none that I wanted to keep in my collection. This is not to say that I haven't seen some I would love to have but I find it usually sells for high prices inordinate to what other similar pottery sells for. I can usually spend my money better if buying for myself. I can rarely touch it for resale unless someone doesn't know what it is.
