Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It says it's a gift article, but they require the viewer to create a free account to view it.

Well, that stinks. The jist of it is a woman in Nebraska was cleaning out her home. She and her daughter had a garage sale and were going to put this large crock in the sale for $20. But they couldn't move it so they left it on the back porch. Then the woman saw an ad for a local auctioneer who was offering a grouping of crocks in his auction so she called him to come get hers and put it in his auction. He told her he thought her crock was rare but couldn't be sure what it would bring.

As soon as he started advertising it, he got bombarded with calls and inquiries from all over the country. So he opened up the auction to telephone bids. He opened the bidding at $1000 and said the bidding was furious for a while. The last bid was a collector from Kansas who bid $32,000. The woman was astonished! And it was her 91st birthday/. The auctioneer stated that the most he got from a Crock was $5800 so this was a record breaker. The author of the article stated that another crock in another auction somewhere went for $144,000. The woman said that the crock had been on her porch for decades (her late husband purchased it but she didn't remember when or where). It was in great condition.

I wanted you all to see the photos. I was able to download just one photo from the story. I hope I look that good if I make it to 91.

The article stated that the crock holds 30 gallons. That looks about right to me.

I have a couple 30 gal crocks but neither of them are quite that old or elaborate as the one at the auction

I just picked up a 10 gallon Red Wing crock with birch leaves in very nice condition but that's as big as I've ever had.

No wonder they couldn't move it; I bet the auctioneer needed an heavy-duty hand truck. Or a forklift. The auction gives the rest of us hope that the "good thing" is hiding in a dusty corner or a back room, unloved and unwanted.

I had a cellar full of inherited stoneware when I was living in the Victorian house. Sold it all, but kept the George Washington commemorative:

Great post, Deb! I especially like the crock with the handle. I never was able to learn much about old crocks because a man who lived in my area bought them all. He had a very large collection but was willing to sell any of them if the price was right. His regular job was delivering Frito/Lay products to stores and drove all over central and southern Ohio. Good pickins for crocks.
