These are 2 more antique books I got along with the set of U.S. Grant Memoirs at a local thrift.
These 2 are 1st editions (?) of Mary Queen of Scots, and they have the publication date of 1824 (in roman numerals, but I checked twice to verify it means 1824 in american numbers) - but when I checked to see if they were 1st editions I found 1 other set on Abe's books website that showed a pair of 1st editions that have a publication date of 1869?
Did I read the roman numerals wrong? Are my dates a typo? Are they typos on Abe's books?
    Any help is appreciated!
PS - I know my book's photo of date is a little blurry, I apologize.

    Really?
OK your right - I did it again and as I started to put it in again & it showed last entry (I guess to save you time if searching something a 2nd time) and it looks like I missed the L ?
So is mine even a 1st edition, since example I posted from Abe's books says 1869?
Thank you & I apologize for the mistake.

Does the first volume have an earlier date? They were most likely published in different years. I doubt being a "first edition" is going to help sell them. They will sell on content/publisher if someone is looking.

Yours is in 2 volumes; the one on ABE is a single volume. Something can be a first edition without being the first time the content is published. The keyword is 'edition'. I agree with Kronos that even if your volumes are from the first printing of the narrative in this particular form, it is not likely to endow them with much increased value. They appear to be in nice bindings & good condition. I don't know if they would have more interest to someone who actually wanted to read them or to an interior decorator.

I sold some antique books before to a lady doing a film shoot for a magazine ad.

Sometimes a book is judged by its cover. :joyful:

Yours looks like it actually says SECOND EDITION on the title page?

    Maybe Revised Edition (much expanded)?

Ah, yes, I see that possibility now that you mention it. But too blurry for me to definitively tell.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Looks like SECOND EDITION, MUCH ENLARGED to me.

Only looked at 1 of the 2, but clearly says SECOND EDITION, so thanks for getting that sorted. OP's still looks like RE&$ED to me, but obviously not.
