Rusted Metal IRON item...what is it?

Recent $2 garage sale purchase, I have a weakness for rusted items. It's heavy! 14" x 9".

Any significant age? When I google image it I get "iron cross", several, but not this shape. I don't think this is meant to be a cross, ....or??

I initially thought it might be part of an old gate or something, but one thing makes me wonder if it is newer and just rusted, it has a loop of sorts to hang it. See last photo.

I think it is what it appears to be; a Cross (Christian symbol). The wrought embellishments are a bit of a puzzle...but the proportions of the beams, along with the hang-loop, make it plain as day, to me.

For $2 I would have bought that too and hung it on the inside of the garden fence. It's really nice.

 

A piece maybe 25-60 years old, mass produced, but these are assembled with hand work, not just stamped. It's going to be mild steel, not iron.Wrought iron is primarily a pre early 1900's material, though forged iron work is certainly still made. Many of these came from Spain in the 50's to 70's, 'Spanish revival' which was very popular. As you noted, there's something nice and histortic about rusty metal . . it just tells a story. Have my own ollection of wrought pieces. You did well for $2.
