Part of a brass or gilt bronze vessel, do you know what it is, what's missing etc.?

Hi all! Picked this up at auction "as is" knowing that there were parts missing. I liked the decoration on the metal (brass or gilt bronze?) so I rescued it. Do you know what it is and if so what parts are missing? It was described as a bowl but I'm not sure. It definitely looks like something screws into both parts, maybe a finial and base? Just a guess really. Any idea of age or origin? Only marks are "NN" near one of the screw holes. Measures 6.25"L x 6"W. Thanks as always for any info!

Looks like a censor, missing the knob on the lid, and
Most likely a pedestal base. It looks Japanese to my eyes.

From the NN, I'd think an example of Japonisme.

Agree. The French made some great Japonisme pieces.

Thank you! So you think maybe late 19th century possibly? Maybe I can find a way to piece it back together somehow :)

    Late 19th - early 20th imo.
