G Lens says that this is a 19th C Turkish or Greek olive jar. Does that look right to your more intelligent eyes?

37 cm tall (14.5") terracotta with a green glaze; a small decorative motif around the 'shoulder'; lots of scuffing around the widest part, so if this was a utilitarian ware, perhaps it was stored side-by-side with other jars.

    Thank you.

Yes, a Turkish olive jar from Konya, the town of the whirling Dervishes.
It dates from after the introduction of Latin script under Kemal Atatürk. I'll check when that was.

I really like the color of the glaze...that vegetative somber green found in climax rain forests near the moist ground, where the sun rarely if ever penetrates. Bravo!

I have a fondness for these utilitarian wares. Nice one!

    Thank you.

Is the little 'tag' that AJ identified an export tag or something like that? Would that have been on it since its manufacture, or could that have been placed on it later, and the vessel itself be older than it is?
