Featured Clock Lore with Dr. Ghopper

Greetings Culture Fans:

Just scored this beautifully cased clock by Seth Thomas & Sons ca. 1874. It features Diana with a companionable arm around a greyhound, holding a bow in the other hand while she presumably imparts the nuances of the hunt to her eager friend.

Seth Thomas and Sons was formed by Seth's three sons after he passed, and existed from 1865-1879. This was their premium line of clocks; in this case the movement lasts for a hefty 10 days-2 weeks, with the sweetest bell strike ever in my experience. After 150 years it's accurate to less than a minute's error per day.

The case is spelter and patinated spelter, weighing about 30 pounds. It features a stag's head with antlers, bellflowers, swags, pineapples and acanthus leaves. I feel especially lucky to have the bow, which in almost every case has been lost over time. I do wish I had the arrow......
