Featured 'Coalport' cup and saucer

I grabbed this yesterday. There aren't many references to it online. The ones I have found describe it as Coalport. However, I have checked references to Coalport marks and none resemble the marks on mine. Its not a typical Coalport piece in my eyes either. The online examples do not show their bases. The cup is marked with an S and the saucer has an incised X.

 

It is Coalport's Blue Shamrock. I inherited several pieces (c & s, plates) in the pattern with Coalport marks from different dates. It took me a long time to find the pattern name, but finally it appeared online.

Here is a Worthpoint entry for a cup like yours. Maybe someone with Worthpoint acccess can tell us the selling price and when it sold. The entry does not give a date or show the mark. I do not know if the original listing had a picture of the mark

Since yours do not have a Coalport mark, I cannot suggest a date. (I just read Godden for British marks. Some of the earlier Coalport have no marks.) Maybe someone else knows more about the date and what the existing marks (stamped S & 2, incised X) mean. I would like to know also as my cup & saucer have no Coalport mark, just a 5 on the saucer. (The Coalport marks are on my plates. At least one small plate dates c.1875-81.)

 

Thanks for this. There is a trio on ebay for £68. It looks to be in near perfect condition where as mine has issues. Hairlines in handle and saucer. I had to buy it though as it is so unusual. Someone else is selling a different shape set with same pattern for nearly £1000! It does seem to be a pretty rare pattern.

I noticed different numbers on the bottoms of pieces in this pattern: 2, 5, 0, 8. So the number is not a pattern number. Some have the Coalport mark (1875-81), others do not (earlier???, cups with bottoms too small for the stamp???). Hope someone with more knowledge can enlighten us.

 

I haven't been able to find the ebay listing for £68 ("near perfect"). The only unsold Blue Shamrock on ebay that I found was an auction for three plates including one mended.

 

Thanks. Ooh. One with the actual coalport mark on. That's what I wanted for confirmation. The S on mine remains a mystery. Doesn't fit in with Coalbrookdale, John Rose or those small fractional numbers you often see on Coalport. Weird

But based on that figure, most reluctantly!

 

Me too. There are some watchers though so might be close. I guess it depends on how desperate someone is to complete a full tea set.

 

Thanks. Found it on the third try. Wonder why they tell the buyer what the mark is, but offer no photo of mark. This is not truly a set because the lower plate is round and the cup & saucer are octagonal.

 

I haven't done a search yet but Caughley used an S (Salopian) mark that looks similar.

Take this with a grain of salt, google image says

• The "S" Mark on the Cup: On late 19th-century Coalport, a stamped "S" typically indicates a factory second—a piece sold at a discount because of minor firing flaws or imperfections in the glaze. It is not the 18th-century "Salopian" mark used by Caughley, though the similarity often confuses collectors.

Here is another with a Coalport mark (1875-1881). It is my small plate that fits under the c & s. The plate has a stamped number 3 as well as the Coalport mark.

 

The £995 set from a Staffordshire antique dealer says "out of stock," so I assumed that meant "sold." Of course, we do not know what it actually sold for, and antique dealer prices are usually higher. Plus it is a rare set. I would like to know what Worthpoint gives as selling price for the cup & saucer.

Might relate to the set its from maybe? My cup has a small 3 also..

 

This was my first though with that incised X on the bottom of the saucer.

I don't think I'd have been able to leave the shop without that set, either!
