I have no idea if Christie's would or would not value through pictures since I've never contacted them.

With online appraisals at Christies, it has to be something of a value high enough that they would accept it for auction to receive a free appraisal. From above link:

"Christie's is pleased to offer provisional auction estimates free of charge for items which we consider appropriate for auction. We regret that we do not provide auction estimates for items which are of a type or value that is typically not sold in Christie’s auctions."

I contacted them about something one time and only got the "not interested" response.
