I don't usually pay money for old photos, especially of men. But, I splurged for this one. 001.JPG

I honestly don't know. This was the lone photo in the teddy bear shop.

I did an image search, and I have to say this is the best I found of men dressed so formal. Everything is in perfect place.

He really is duded up. Mens' clothing didn't change a lot for a while, especially formal gear. I don't know if he's from 1915 or 1935. These days the only time you see someone in topper and tails, and gloves, is for Prom. Some guys think it's cool. (and they're right.)

One could probably narrow down the decade by researching when men wore top hats with long ties as an alternative to a bow ties.

Hard to say for certain, but he appears not to be wearing a ring on his left hand.

I'd guess 1920-1925-ish from the veil and the shoes.

The men's fashion could have continued on, however.

Kennedy wore a top hat to his inauguration, and IIRC a cutaway too. Mens formal gear didn't change a lot.

The printing format will clue you in to the year taken, paper print w/ markings on reverse, cabinet card, etc. This will certainly be much later then Civil war era when top hats were the rage . . looks 1900-20's ?

It looks like a silver gelatin print. That squares with all of the 20s/30s dating.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I accidentally deleted the contents of this post while trying to make a more "correct" statement about the photo I was posting. Then tried to get it back, and the photo is only in thumbnail now. Ooops!

Debora was making a comment about the statement I made about the photo.

On closer look, that appears to be the "swinging" bow tie that Astaire was famous for and not a traditional necktie.

How ironic! Kennedy is credited with putting the nail in the coffin of the American hat industry. Unless I’m misremembering. I saw a program that gave him that credit. He was young (ish), and cool, and didn’t wear hats generally speaking. “Folks” say that led to a cultural shift during that era of men no longer wearing hats. I wish I could recall what the program was. It was within the last few months. I even brought it up to my father and after thinking back on it he seemed to think it there might be some truth to it. I wasn’t around during that time, and I’m sure he wore a hat every now and then but if it was on TV or the internet it must be true.

Hats were dying anyway; he just put the nail in the coffin. My brain may have farted; he may have refused to wear the hat. Can't blame him. Still, they were far more attractive than the backwards baseball caps I still see around.

This is Kennedy in his top hat. I know there are better ones. But, this is the first that popped up. My guy looks much better. These guys look like fools. [IMG]
