Please help to identify

Hi, can anyone please help to identify this. I think it is an old needlepoint or embroidery but I would appreciate if anyone can tell me anything else. It is approx 18cm squared and has been sewn on to a silk like fabric. Thanks

 

While I don't know much about needlepoint, this looks like it could be one of those kits that were purchased which included the pattern on a backing, the yarns, needle and sometimes a small stretcher. I remember them being popular in the 80s and 90s. Wait for others to give opinions.

 

It does indeed appear to be a piece of needlepoint made from a stamped kit. The internet identifies the bird as a bullfinch made from an Anchor pattern. (I cannot verify the latter.) I would think vintage rather than antique and produced in the first half of the 20th century (which is consistent with the popularity of petunias.) At 7", a small, decorative wall hanging rather than a pillow or seat cover. Let's see what others think.

If I were guessing, I'd think it was the center of a seat cover. They sold the kits with the fancy part pre-stiched, and then you bought wool yarn in your choice of colors and did the rest yourself. Your piece looks like someone found an unworked birdie, thought it was cute, and stitched the center bit to a backing fabric.

 

Kind of a small seat cover at 18cm. This could be hung in its stretcher or be mounted in a small frame.
