Also, those cages to the right, what are they called?

Yes, foxing. Not sure if you need to hire a pro or can do the job yourself. I'm sure you can find some info online from a reputable source.

    Look to be lobster pots.

If it is foxing (not sure it is ?) professional techniques may be of limited use. Even if the piece is fumed or spotted, rather than immersed, the fugitive quality and "freshness" of the watercolour will be compromised. I only recommend foxing treat ments on watercolours in extreme cases. Removing the backing and replacing it with alphamat or other neutral backing will stop further problems and halt the foxing process.

I’m thinking it may be sepia brown spattering to get an effect of the landscape/seascape.

To some extent, the "foxing" can be brushed off once the glass is removed. And I would stop at that (except for new backing, of course). Fortunately, no one will notice except you. And us. I'll be sure to point it out when I come to your house! :)

    The cages are crab pots.
