Antique trunk

This was my 90 year old mothers great grandmothers trunk. Unfortuntally it has been painted and lined with ugly paper. Is it possible to have it refinished or even worth it?

 

It's a shame someone painted it. Domed trunks are tough to sell even in top shape, so I'd just keep it in the family. I'm betting if the lining isn't original it's darned close. I'd leave it alone.

 

that paint ain't coming off , and that paper is , or at least resembles the period.

It is what it is.... but not worth changing ..imo.

 

Some family member updated it in the 1960s-1970s with the floral micro-print lining but respected the original color lithograph label. The label appears to date to the late Victorian era. You can use that date to confirm the accuracy of your trunk's provenance -- that it belonged to your great-great grandmother.

I am finding original condition dome-tops under $50.00 regularly, and sometimes a lot cheaper. Not worth paying someone to strip this. Maybe strip just the wood slats and paint the rest in a more harmonious color?

 

If it was me, I'd leave bad enough alone and throw and afghan on top. Messing with strippers, in my hands, might make it worse instead of better.
