I posted this six years ago but never posted a good photo of the mark. It looks like an imperial eagle in a shield? NAK above that. I’d lean towards German but could be wrong there. Any help with a maker ID would be appreciated. IMG_7643.jpeg IMG_7644.jpeg IMG_7642.jpeg

N for Nürnberg, AK for the master pewterer.
It is also a Nürnberg mark, only that one doesn't have the maker's initials, but it says 'Probzin'. Probzin translates as 'sample tin', no idea what that means.

Thank you! It does look quite similar in style and manufacture. Oddly that one has no mark. It is dated 1719 though. That’s about 100 years earlier than I figured mine might be and 100 years earlier than your mark research says mine might be. I never did an image search on this piece. Just did one and it turns out there’s quite a few similar that come up. I love the flying fish on your example.

Thanks! Makes sense. To clarify…AK is the makers/master pewterer’s initials. AK isn’t the mark for an any random craftsman who’s achieved the status of master pewterer?

This was the time of guilds, which controlled quality and selected who was allowed to join.
The pewterers guild would have had a process of acceptance into the guild. For instance, first as an apprentice, then as a pewterer, and finally as a master pewterer. A random craftsperson would have been kicked out of town for illegal work outside the guild, thereby undermining the system and dodging the guild's quality control and town taxes.
