1950's ruby glass bowl/vase (?)

The other day, I asked DH, "What are those boxes in the back corner of the garage?" to which he replied, "I have no idea. I thought they were yours." Hmmm.

It seems that 2 years ago when we moved here, the movers transferred a pile of forgotten boxes from our old garage to our new one. Those long-forgotten boxes were still packed from our prior move, in 1996. Over the last few days, I've been unearthing all sorts of things!

This bowl(?) vase(?) or whatever belonged to my mother. It was a wedding gift from her matron of honor in 1952. Mom always hated it, but she kept it around & put it out on display whenever "Olive" came to visit. (Mom & Olive are both still kicking, tho Mom is in FL & Olive still back in CT...)

Anyway, Mom gave it to me when she moved to FL in the early 1980's, using the reasoning, "You've always liked red."

Well, yes, I like red, but let's just say that this particular vase/bowl thing has never been my style.

I know nothing about it, but it's sort of shaped like a tulip, and it's very heavy. It's 8" tall at the tips of the "petals", but only 4 1/8" tall from the base to the dips at the bottom of the "petals" (which sort of precludes putting water and flowers in it...) It's 7 1/8" across the widest part of the top, and 3 1/4" across the bottom.

Can anyone tell me anything about it?

Any spots in the pictures or anything that looks like a crack or other damage is simply the result of my very rusty photography skills!

Thanks so much for any input.

Hi SBSVC - I think it's from Duncan Miller's American Way line.

CERTAINLY it will hold flowers!!! Line it with lemon leaves (or whatever greenery you have), making sure it shows at the dips. Then use, for example, large lemon lillies at each dip. Prop up a circle of babies' breath against the lillies, prop up another circle of baby yellow mums against the babies' breath, and top with a tall deep red rose to match the vahse!

(I call it the ice cream sundae formation. LOL!)

Thank you, thank you, thank you, dgbjwc, Gila & Silver!

It looks as if this particular piece was part of a console set. (I wonder what happened to the other pieces - or if Mom ever actually had them. I don't remember ever seeing them.)

Anyway, now that I know what it is, I'll probably put a note in it, wrap it up, and stick it back in a box... Maybe? Or maybe not (?)

Honestly, I thought I was finished with finding unexpected items in boxes in corners... It took me months to do a major downsizing in 2014... Why do I still have such an awful lot of stuff?

I may be posting more soon, Gila!

And Silver, thanks for the suggestion about a floral arrangement - it actually sounds very pretty!

    Thanks again, all!
