This is 18 x 23 cm (7"x 9") colored etching is nicely framed, by a frame shop in a wealthy place, so maybe the image has some value? There seem to be many different versions of the image and even more of the same view.

I think the left side says the place, but I don't know the right-side inscription. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

    From Ai

    • The text on the left, "Rothenburg Tauber," identifies the location depicted in the artwork.
    • The text on the right, "Originalrad. von R. Bado," indicates the item is an original etching by an artist whose surname appears to be Bado.

I wandered Rothenburg for 2 days, got lost in the maze of narrow streets for a full day, didn’t mind at all. The houses are all painted different colors, and there’s a good amount of the ancient wall remaining. Definitely in my top 10 favorite German places.

I think my uncle went there in 1945 and dropped bombs on it.

    • After the war, the destroyed sections were rebuilt using international donations.
While often called an "intact" medieval city, that status refers to the impressive reconstruction and the survival of its core, rather than an absence of damage

Thanks @Antiquefab. Again. You're so good at that-- I really appreciate you taking the time to help.

    Sounds fun @anundverkaufen.

Sounds not fun for davey's uncle.

Correct, but just to add, it says "Rothenburg/Tauber", which is short for Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
There are several Rothenburgs in Germany, this one is on the river Tauber. It is a well-known and very pretty tourist town on Germany's "Romantic Road".
Again an abbreviation, Originalrad. is short for Originalradierung. Radierung means etching.

Well, that was a careless thing to do.:playful:
Just kidding, I am grateful he helped to liberate the Continent and protect Britain.:)
I think that is the case with nearly all historic towns and cities. Too many wars, and in past times fires easily spread through an entire town.

Ditto w/ much of Europe being rebuilt.
*Funny factoid- the main reason we have two fairly intact Roman cities was because of a historic fire bombing of sorts, but done by a volcano and not a B-29-Herculaneum and Pompeii.

PS-'The highest mortality rate for WWII bomber crews was experienced by the British RAF Bomber Command, with a 44.4% to 46% death rate. Over 55,000 out of 125,000 aircrew were killed, making it one of the most dangerous, if not the most dangerous, roles in the Allied armed forces.Only 24% of aircrew survived the war without being killed or wounded.' DAMN- didn't know that !

My Uncle Will survived his service in Bomber Command, he did many raids, my cousin has his log book stating where he was each night.
Sadly after the war around 1953-55 he got cancer and ended his life.

    I wonder if it wasn't service-related.
