I see a guy sitting on a bench and raising his glass, possibly a dog under the bench, and an innkeeper walking towards him, holding a jug.

I see two figures straddling a single bench playing cards.

 

I see two kids on a seesaw. But since the seesaw has a rather fancy base and one of the kids seems to be holding something, it is probably a tavern scene.
And no kids.

 

where? Out of a rubble-filled wall in central Virginia
material ? Brass or bronze I believe .. it is non-magnetic
size ? 11.11 CM (4.375 inches)

excavated???? Not from the ground but from a rubble-filled rock wall I am restoring around an old family cemetery.

 

The 'thing' that Marote thought could be a dog, and I thought was an elaborate base, now looks like a rooster.

Small and doesn't appear to have originally had a hanger so meant to sit, I'd think.

I don't think it's all that old, but I could be full of rubble, er, rubbish. I agree with tavern scene, maybe a pin or trinket dish? The surface sems to have suffered a bit in the rubble.

 

Could very well be wrong but... I'd think 20th century during one of the Colonial Revival periods. 1910s-1930s most likely. A little decorative dish. Simpler design than many.

With the pic from the back it does indeed seem to be clear that they're both straddling the bench.

 

It looks like the men may be arm wrestling. Perhaps something like these brass plates made by Peerage -

Yup, after several confused looks!

 

Chimney hole cover? I've seen somewhat similar covering vent holes on old kitchen stoves. The size would be dead on, as would the materials.
