Flat Weave? Old? Need Rug ID Please

I couldn't pass up on this rug I bought at my local flea market. After I purchased it, a gentleman said that's a "nice old flat weave rug" you got there! Not wanting to show my ignorance, I said "thank you" and walked away.

Is that what I have? LOL. Measures 44 by 60 inches.

No, not a flatweave. These rugs are made with an embroidery technique - chain stitch - rather than being woven on a loom. They are made in Kashimir.

Looks like crewel work to me.

Crewel work is usually made with a combination of stitches and it has more texture, the result of French knots and couching of motifs, for instance.

The technique could also be called crewel work, which basically means embroidery created with woolen yarns. Chain stitch is the specific stitch used in these rugs. It is worked with a single hook, not a needle. Some more info -
