20191123_172052-756x1008.jpeg 20191123_172034.jpg I recently acquired a 10 inch diameter plate which intrigued me but is beyond my expertise in pinning down an identification and a value. Any help would be much appreciated.

I get a Talavera feel from it, but not my field.

Would it surprise you to learn the top word is Talavera? Oh, yes, sniped by Bronwen!

[Edit] Frank's reply had not appeared on my screen when I wrote the following:

If you're asking me, no, only slightly. It was the gestalt that made me think that could be it, Google a little for other examples, come back & make suggestion. But really, person couldn't do it more clearly than that? Are you confirming for OP?

And JJ's edit now shows where the message is repeated inside my post, but not yet in the original post. Mysteries of the Internet.

    Quite right.
    Many thanks.
Now I have a better direction for my research.

Greatest frustration of my early years: watching Burma Shave signs go by at the edges of Iowa corn fields, only to find the last one missing.

    @Bronwen

    It never failed,
    You'd read them through,
    Then at the last
    You'd just be

    ;)

Spanish, not Mexican, of course. And the maker is SASO as it reads. A poor translation from wikipedia.org.

"Polychrome Series with Scenes and Animals
They began to become popular in the 18th century and have reached the beginning of the 21st century. González Zamora differentiates five sub-series: realistic polychromes, polychromes with small leaf, polychromes with trifolios, emerald series and mixed series of polychromes and blues. They represent a return to the late-Baroque mannerism and reproduce very diverse scenes, not only the topical, most famous, hunting or isolated animals, groves, etc. The scenes, especially in the emerald series, are painted in a range of "green tones" that, being later recovered by the great potters of Henche, Ruiz de Luna and Saso, have given identity marks to the Talavera pottery of the Queen."

Other examples of their work are floating around the internet.

    Hi Bronwen,
We had all the Burma Shave signs along the major roads. I used to love when I would find one where the kids changed the last sign to say something "dirty"

Just doesn't look like Rocinante to me the way the first one does.

El Cid is usually depicted in a more bellicose posture. Don't see him on Spanish ceramics much; this souvenir plate from Burgos is an exception.
