Dirty basket who dunnit

Not my dirty basket but I wonder who made the basket before it was dirtied? My little bits of knowledge aren’t pointing me anywhere on this one.

 

It looks like it might be made with sisal, which would be more typical of some baskets from east-central Africa (Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania), as well as some from South Africa. That purple color is also a dye that shows up in African baskets beginning in the '70's and '80's. As you can see, it fades quickly.

I do not think it is Hopi, as suggested on the ebay listing that google lens found. The materials are not right, and the coiling at the start tapers gradually in size. Hopi coiling tends to change more abruptly to their typical fat coils -

Thanks 2many! I didn’t see it on eBay, on a social media marketplace rather. I was dubious of the attribution, which is why I posted here. The purple caught my eye as well. I’ve had a few with brown fibers that I didn’t realize may have been purple at one point.
