Hi Joe and welcome to the boards!

How big is this and what is that bottom part made of? My first thought was of ink balls that used to be covered in leather/sheepskin to apply ink to type for printing but I don't know if they were still using those in 1865 (I'm guessing it's 18 and not 19).

There is a way to search patents by date so if no one knows it can probably be found.

It weighs about 10 to 15 lbs and is About 12 inches tall. Not sure if the handle is original though.

Did he ever specify the "art" this was plied with (grammar??)

I see he did manage to invent the first refill, but didn't claim it - he'd have been a zillionaire!

When worn the niallet(sp) may be replaced by turning it down on the centers left in the bolt d, and when requisite new disks may be introduced between the plates b and c.

I claim-` As a new article of manufacture, the mallet

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

"This mallet maybe made of almost universal application among craftsmen-as, for example, marble and freestone workers, wood-workers, shoemakers,"
    Interesting though..........
