What is this Mauchline Ware piece?

    I thought it was a thread box until I looked at it closer. There is no hole in the lid. Any ideas? Is it for something else or is it a manufacturing flaw that the thread hole is blocked?

    the hole on the inside looks closed up as well...

    but , victorian string box ..... most likely..
