Long Tapered Forged Spike with Forged Eye: What Purpose?

    Overall it's 14 1/2", the straight shaft is 12", with a ~2" diameter eye; it appears to have begun as 5/16" irregular octagonal steel stock, perhaps pre-forged, or roll-formed? It sounds tempered...weight is 4.4 ounces.
    I can envision it as a handy item for a variety of crafts...but wonder if any of y'all can narrow that to a specific purpose?
