Just picked up this 9 " tall, 3 lb 6 1/2 oz bronze Guanyin /Kwan Yin.Base is sealed with a thin piece of sheet bronze, and the piece is weighted- fragments of something rattle around inside when you shake it.
When I tap the base sheet it dings like a drum, further up no ding/echo-the core becomes more solid
There are traces of incised or cast seals on the reverse, either very lightly done or worn away (3rd pic down).
It's one of the more attractive Bodhisattvas I've owned, but my experience with Asian bronzes is rudimentary.
Can anyone out there offer an approximation of the age of this piece and country of origin ?
    As always-thank you big !

I have a Buddha that looks very similar, with a sort of brassy color, an almost identical pedestal, and the thin plate sealing the base. It is quite heavy, rattles, and has similar (but worse) corrosion problems. I have found another Buddha the same as mine - close enough that I assume they were cast from the same mold - that a website specializing in Buddhist art dates to the early 20th century.

    Here is mine -

    Brass-Bronze Buddha 2 - small.jpg

And the identical one dated to the early 20th century -

I would guess your Guanyin would be a similar date. And please, do remove the dust. It will trap moisture and contribute to corrosion problems.

I jazzed up my color a bit too much, a bad thing to do w/ patina and a lot of art- it's closer to this kind of bronze coloration.

Here's a Guanyin on Ebay that resembles mine (80%). The Seller says that even though it may have period seals, they believe it's late 20th Century. I say thanks for the honesty, an honorable vendor ! I'd give them positive feedback if I could- Ebay needs more Sellers like these good folk.
PS- Still investigating my piece, but I know one thing-Chinese artisans are skilled enough to make your iPhone or Android look like it was excavated from a Bronze Age midden !!!
PS- That's why when I buy Chinese I always go very cheap. My brain isn't savvy to outsmart a 5,000 yr old culture !
