Armillary sundial with elephant that has wings any clue to who made it?

Perhaps it is just me but . . . why is that elephant standing inside a white circle? I'm thinking maybe the elephant is a later(?) addition and that there may have been another object meant to go inside that circle.

 

Appears to be a piece of late 20th C whimsy.

Well "whimsey" would certainly apply to an elephant with wings (or two pairs of ears) and a long "thick" tail.

Does the elephant rotate? Perhaps he has scraped the surface; I see part of a second ring around him.

 

Yes the elephant spin & the foot is what caused the circle

 

I think modern decorative import. India or China are likely. What is the base made of?

OR - look closely at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd pictures - the 'heel' of the elephant's foot....as if someone was turning or had spun the elephant around repeatedly..... seems to fit that white groove........

Does anyone else see it as a marriage? What does the pachyderm have to do with the other thing? Why is his tail sticking out beyond the base? Ok maybe he rotated from his original position.
