Basket #3 Small/Medium Buttocks

About 5.5 x 6.5 inches and 5.5 inches tall. Nice and tight despite a fair amount of loss where the handle meets the top rim on both sides. Oak splint / split oak? Any idea of the region it is from?

or.......NC, mid Atlantic, New England.... buttocks basket...

folks place them in a number of regions.........

the missing Gods Eye .... where the loss is.....is a major detractor for this late 1800's American basket...

the traditional hat...... came with the lot..

as you can see , from the mid to northeast US....this type of basket was woven by many cultures ......and can be difficult telling one from the other just on sight...

Is it actually Mellon basket, as in Carnegie Mellon? Or are they melon baskets, for the shape?
