Help needed with small wooden box

Small wooden box 7 × 6.5 inches.Think it might be 19ct jewelry box or apothecary box.Any help appreciated.

 

How deliciously appropriate with Halloween approaching-I'm guessing it's a Dybbuk Box !

It is a jewellery box imo. My first thought was French, although I do see some Dutch influence.

Google showed one for sale in Ireland, but it was a dead link.

 

Hmm...another bit of arcana. How have I managed to live all these years without the inspiration of understanding about the Dybbuk box? Wonder of wonders...

 

Might be obvious to most but the wood is oak and the decorations are gesso. As such this is likely late 19th century or early 20th century. Not typically American so I will leave it to others to ponder origin and use.

 

The more noble part of the answer is I've read a lot of IMHO superb Jewish writers,and when it comes to old occult folk tales- none better than by Isaac Bashevis Singer (Satan In Goray,etc),the schlocky answer is I've watched a lot of mediocre and bad horror movies.

I love him too Whit.He writes like a very folksy down to earth mensch-one of those greats who manages to seamlessly combine the ordinary and the profound.
He's not gonna crack your skull with overly clever verbiage or painful repetition.

 

A huge thanks to all for input on wooden box,although if I'm to go by [Boscos] theory of a Dybbuk Box ,I think I'd give it a miss, would I really want one of them..I am of the opinion that it is late 19ct as per [ Verybrad], purely from the shape of front legs and the brass lock, and the fact that [ Komokwa] and [ Any J ] are leaning towards German/ Dutch origin,I'll do a little more research with that in mind.
